The Schools of Sanctuary programme is not political — it simply helps schools understand why people seek safety and encourages communities to lead with kindness, empathy, and humanity.
At Lightcliffe Academy, we are proud to be a school where every child feels safe, individual needs are understood, and pupils are equipped to be thoughtful, compassionate members of our community. Our work in curriculum planning, pastoral care, library provision, EAL support, buddy systems, stretch and challenge groups, and diversity initiatives all contribute to an environment that celebrates equity, dignity, and belonging.
We are looking forward to being officially recognised as a School of Sanctuary. This national award would celebrate the dedication and hard work of our staff, students, and wider community in creating a warm, welcoming, and supportive environment for all learners, including those seeking sanctuary.
Our ethos is reflected in everything we do — from SHAED (PSHE) lessons that explore identity, culture, and social responsibility, to student-led initiatives, fundraising for St Augustine’s, and thoughtfully planned diversity events. These practices ensure that inclusion is not just aspirational, but embedded in daily life at the Academy.
Being awarded School of Sanctuary status would recognise Lightcliffe Academy as a place where diversity is celebrated, new arrivals are supported practically and emotionally, and students are encouraged to act as ethically informed changemakers. It would affirm our commitment to building a culture where every learner feels a true sense of belonging.
Achieving this recognition is not the end of the journey — it marks the continuation of our dedication to welcome, understanding, and compassion. We will continue to grow, improve, and work collaboratively with students, families, and the wider community to ensure that Lightcliffe Academy remains a place of sanctuary for all.
