Media is becoming a greater part of our society every day. Our vision is to prepare students for the society we envision for tomorrow, to enable students to become critical, intelligent consumers of the mass media. We aim to foster an understanding of the media's power to influence, shape and define our concepts of identity, reality and social values.
Pupils will follow the BTEC Tech Award in Creative Media. Learners will develop their understanding of the relationship between media products, their audiences and purposes. This is done through a mixture of practical workshops and analysis of creative work from experts in the field.
Everyone taking this qualification will sill study three components covering the following areas:
Component 1: Exploring Media Products
Developing their understanding of how media products create meaning for their audiences. Learners will examine existing products and explore media production techniques.
Component 2: Developing Digital Media Production Skills
Develop and apply skills and techniques in media production processes by creating a media product from one of the following sectors: audio/moving image, print or interactive design.
Component 3: Create a Media Product in Response to a Brief
Apply and develop their planning and production skills and techniques to create a media product in response to a client brief.
Pupils will deepen their learning through talk- learning to speak like a specialist and communicate ideas using talk tactics. They will learn to read for both information and meaning in a media-rich world.
Students will learn to work collaboratively with one another, replicating the modern working environment. They will be taught to be resilient life-long learners through learning to refine and improve their knowledge and skills. They will study a challenging and ambitious curriculum that will ensure they have the skillset to succeed in the field of media.
Assessment takes place at the end of each component.
Components 1 and 2 are both worth 30%. They are assessed by completing coursework during year 10.
Component 3 is worth 40% and must be completed at the end of year 11. This is a mixture of work completed under exam conditions and practical media creation.
Students can go on to study computer science at A-Level and then a wide range of university courses and apprenticeships thereafter.
