Art and Design embody some of the highest forms of human creativity and here at Lightcliffe Academy we offer a high-quality education, which engages, inspires, and challenges students; equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own work. This builds confidence in our students such that they can engage with and appreciate the power of creativity in the world around them.
Students will learn how to handle a range of materials, they will develop drawing skills and how to research artists, art movements and cultures. This will then develop their independent thinking and problem-solving skills, resulting in a final outcome for each project.
The core skills of drawing, research, analysing and media exploration are spiralled through their learning across KS3 creating strong foundations for KS4.
There is continuous scope for oracy and literacy skills to be developed at KS3 with students reflecting on artists’ work as well as their own through class/peer discussion, formal presentation and written annotation. The Oracy Framework is followed to develop oracy skills and build confidence. Students will read for instruction and for information within Art as part of their studies.

Art & Design encourages problem solving and enhances mood as thoughts and ideas can be expressed. This not only supports students’ success in Art, but also other subjects as creative thinking is developed and nurtured. In career terms, the creative industry is growing rapidly, generating over £120 billion a year in the UK; and the new approach to STEM with the addition of ‘Arts’ subjects means that STEAM pathways are becoming more popular as industries seek employees with problem solving and creative skills.
At KS4 students will follow the AQA GCSE specification – 60% coursework and 40% exam. Both incorporate four assessment objective areas -Development (research), Exploration of media, Recording and development of their own ideas, Outcome – final piece.
Students will create a portfolio of coursework which will include two extended projects running through Yr10 and a mock exam which runs from the end of Yr10 into Yr11. The final exam will be introduced at the start of the Spring term and will run until the end of the course.
