What do I need to study the course? You should have five GCSEs grades A*- C, which includes Geography, at grade C. Geography is for students who have enquiring minds and enjoy examining the topical issues of today as well as the physical geography of our planet. What does the course involve? Geography is a subject which engages with the relationship of human populations to each other over space and time and their relationship with their physical environment at a variety of scales from the local to the global. All the units specified in AQA GCE Geography offer opportunities for you to consider: Your own roles, values and attitudes in relation to themes and issues being studied The roles, values and attitudes of others including decision makers Your own investigative and analytical skills. You will be required to participate in a series of fieldwork investigations throughout the course and you will have opportunities to select from a wide variety of topics to produce an independent piece of work at A-Level which will count as 20% of the full A-Level. You can choose to do either an AS qualification (1 year course) or an A-Level qualification (2 year course) both of these courses are examined as linear courses and all the exams and non-exam assessment are submitted at the end of the course. The following units will be studied: Physical Geography and Environments Water and Carbon Cycles* Hazards* Coastal systems and landscapes Human Geography Changing Places* Global systems and global governance Resource Security Geographical Investigation Geography fieldwork investigation and skills* Individual investigation (3,000 – 4,000 words) (The topics with a "*" are the ones completed by the AS students. The A-Level students will study all topics.) What next? Where can you go? Anywhere! Geography has a wide range of transferable skills which means that geographers are literate and numerate which makes them highly employable. Many geographers have continued to study the subject at university but others have used Geography as a stepping stone to study other subjects such as Geology, Engineering, Planning and Environmental Science.
