What do I need to study the course? You must have studied Food at GCSE and achieved a grade B or above. You must be able to work independently, and be organised with equipment and ingredients. A Food Science and nutrition diploma encourages you to take a broader view of food as well as developing your capacity to make and develop both every day and highly skilled products and to appreciate the complex relations and reactions between ingredients. What does the course involve? An understanding of food science and nutrition is relevant to many industries and job roles. Care providers and nutritionists in hospitals use this knowledge, as do sports coaches and fitness instructors. Hotels and restaurants, food manufacturers and government agencies also use this understanding to develop menus, food products and policies that that support healthy eating initiatives. Many employment opportunities within the field of food science and nutrition are available to students. The course is broken down as follows; Year 12 - Food Science and Nutrition Certificate Unit 1 - Meeting the Nutritional Needs of Specific Groups– written examination and practical coursework combined. The paper is graded at pass, merit and distinction. Year 13 - Food Science and Nutrition Diploma Unit 2 – Ensuring food is safe to eat is a controlled assessment task which is marked by the exam board. Unit 3 – Current issues in Food Science and Nutrition is again controlled assessment marked internally. Some of the learning will take place through the use of interesting and practical work-related experiences, e.g. Observation within a food industry/catering settings. Visits to establishments such as restaurants, hotels, sports centres, nurseries, day centres, schools and residential settings. Outside speakers – professional or individuals with personal relevant experiences What next? Learners will gain the required knowledge to use the qualification to support entry to higher education courses such as BSc Human Nutrition, BSc (Hons) Public Health Nutrition, BSc (Hons) Food Science and Technology, BSc (Hons) Dietetics and Nutrition, BSc (Hons) Nutrition and Sports Science.
