BTEC Creative Digital Media

What do I need to study this course?

You should have five GCSEs grades A*- C (or equivalent). You do not need to have studied Media Studies before, but this course does require a passion for the media. If you like watching films, TV, interacting on social media, making your own YouTube videos or blogs then this is probably the course for you.

What does the course involve?

The Level 3 BTEC Creative Digital Media Extended Certificate course is a two year vocational qualification. It is a highly practical course where you will combine learning the skills of analysis of existing media texts alongside the practical skills required to create and make your own. Its sits alongside other subjects very well including Drama, Photography, Art, Psychology and English. No prior experience is necessary but you will need to be enthusiastic and determined to succeed.

The following units will be studied:


1. Media Representations
  • A 2 hour onscreen exam where you analyse a series of unseen texts. (25%)

2. Preproduction Portfolio

  • Students undertake the creation of a portfolio of preproduction activities such as scripting and storyboarding for a short film. Internally Assessed (25%)

3. Responding to a Commission

  • A 5 hour controlled external assessment where you respond to a brief given from the exam board to conceptualise and plan out a media product ready for pitching. (25%)


Students will choose one of the following routes for their main production all are internally assessed and worth 25%:

4. Film (Fiction) Production

  • Students will create a full short film from inception to final cut.

5. Radio (Fiction) Production

  • Students will create a 15 minute Radio Drama from inception to final Mix.

6. Digital magazine Production

  • Students will create their own interactive app based digital magazine.

What next?

The Level 3 BTEC Creative Digital Media course is designed to help launch students into careers within the digital media sector or onto Higher Education. Due to the practical nature of the course it is also highly valued by prospective employers. This course is best suited to those wishing to follow a career in media production or design.
