What entry requirements do I need to study the course?

GCSE Geography Level 5

What does the course involve?

Geography is highly valued by universities as an A Level choice. This is a subject most likely to be required or preferred for entry to degree courses. Your A Level geography course will cover both the physical and human environments and the complex interaction of processes that shape our world. This is complex and varies from place to place depending on people’s resources, technology and culture. There is plenty of room for discussion and extended research which will help you become an independent thinker and learner. You will learn in a wide variety of ways such as by using maps, GIS skills, data analysis, photos, videos, podcasts, as well as attending lectures and study days. You will be encouraged to frame your own questions using higher level thinking skills and showing your grasp of complex issues through report and essay writing.

Human Geography

  • Section A Global systems and global governance
  • Section B Changing places
  • Section C Contemporary urban environments

Written exam 2 hour 30 min, 96 marks 40% of A Level

Component 2: Human geography

What’s assessed:

  • Section A: Global systems and global governance
  • Section B: Changing Places
  • Section C: Contemporary urban environments

Written exam 2 hour 30 min, 96 marks 40% of A Level

Component 3: Geographical investigation

Students complete an individual investigation which must include data collected in the field. The individual investigation must be based on a question or issue defined and developed by the students relating to any part of the specification.

3000‐4000 words 35 marks, 20% of A Level marked by teachers and moderated by AQA
